You might be wondering when will your little one begin to verbally answer your questions. At one or two years of age, children use a lot of gestures to communicate. To get your child to practice answering questions, ask them many questions that are similar, but change the first word. For example, you might ask:. If they answer something incorrectly, you can explain and then work on those specific questions later on.
When you bring your baby home from the hospital, you have dozens of questions, so you call your pediatrician. To find out whether your child is meeting the milestones, you need to assess their ability to answer these question types. This way, you will be able to find out what areas they would benefit from through practicing. However, you do not necessarily need to take a test to evaluate. You can also gather the information informally.
You can start by taking note of what types of questions your child asks and seeing whether they ask them correctly. For starters, ask a series of similar questions. Here is an example:. This process will allow you to see what your child is having trouble with and what you need to work on. As an exercise, start with asking them 10 of each type of question.
Take note of what they can understand correctly and calculate a percentage. If not, these will be the areas of focus for practice. While you are assessing, make sure to take note of where your child is having diffuculty. Do they understand the question words? Are they having trouble comprehending the grammatical structures?
Can they formulate a grammatically and semantically correct response? These questions will help you find the root of the problem. A study showed that compared to children with typical development who meet their developmental milestones for language, the language-disordered children were not only less successful in giving answers that conformed to the informal category constraints of the particular wh- form, but they also provided fewer responses characterized by fact and logic.
After the assessment, you will have a pretty good idea of where to start and what to focus on, and what your child needs help with.
When you figure out problem points, start with the easiest questions. As you can see, this list of benefits ranges from social skills to critical thinking. Wh- questions lay the groundwork for making new friends, preparing for preschool, and of course, learning fun stuff!
Researchers asked fathers Family Fun Fact: statistically, fathers are more likely to ask wh- questions than moms, which is why they were chosen for this experiment to play, read, and ask their toddler questions for minutes. In addition, when the toddlers were brought back in a year later, the researchers found that the toddlers who were exposed to more wh- questions had a stronger vocabulary and better verbal reasoning skills.
Not all wh- questions are created equal. What color is this? Where is your teddy bear? Who lives in that house? The good news is that toddlers are curious by nature, so practicing wh- questions is going to be a blast for them no matter what. Who Needs…? When Do You…? After all, isn't that what's most important?
Perhaps you can also stop being so sensitive when people ask innocent questions and grow a spine for the sake of your child. The truth is there are things unique to your child but there are also parenting mistakes that you are probably making.
Every parent will make mistakes. If you can see your friends as people to learn from instead of feeling so sensitive about your fragile ego, that will get you a long way. Parenting like everything in life is a competition. I have a 19 month daughter and go through the same situation and I saw myself in you. Thank you! By Caroline Chirichella May 13, Save Pin FB More.
