Look for rock on right painted with large "CK" letters indicating turn to Crown King. You'll continue north on easy road for a while across private land before trail enters the Prescott National Forest, where conditions gradually get more difficult. Make an important right turn uphill at switchback on Forest Road Pass Oro Belle Mine as trail turns north through townsite.
Note remains of various structures. You'll soon turn left across a very rocky dry creek and begin climbing a steep, narrow shelf road with difficult spots in places. You intersect with major dirt road called Senator Highway The town of Crown King is to the right.
Road changes to County Road 52, on which unlicensed vehicles are technically not legal. Many take their chances to reach Crown King, but expect a ticket if you run into a ranger.
Licensed vehicles can continue on County Road 52 all the way out to Interstate Unlicensed need to turn around and return the way they came. This is a very popular trail on the weekends. The Crown King Scramble is a point to point uphill 50 kilometer foot race from the shores of Lake Pleasant in the heart of the Sonoran Desert to the town of Crown King in the ponderosa pines of the Bradshaw Mountain Range.
The first half of the race is on rolling smooth dirt forest roads and the back half is on rough four wheel drive jeep trail that climbs steeply up into the mountains.

French Creek Mile Race Shuttle This is a point to point course. One-way shuttle tickets can be purchased here until March 17th. This shuttle picks up at the finish in Crown King and returns runners to the start at Lake Pleasant around a 2. The first shuttle will depart around noon, and subsequent shuttles will leave when full.
Crown King is a high mountain town at an elevation of 1. Much of the road to the town uses an old railroad bed running across desert, over gold mines, and through forest. Starting from Interstate 17, the road is A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is required.
Most of this route is easy to moderate; however, there are a few difficult places that will challenge stock vehicles. It has gotten worse over the years, especially the steepest part in the last four miles. Erosion has exposed more rocks and deep ruts have formed.
Aggressive stock vehicles with good articulation can get up this trail but they may need to stack rocks or be helped with a tow strap. The views were nice. There are plenty of places to stop to let the dogs out along the way. When we made it to town we discovered the saloon was closed.
Luckily the General Store was open. Picked up some snacks and fudge of course. Now onward to Prescott! I started on crown king road and ended up going all the way to bumblebee and then back on the highway.
